Working with young people from poor backgrounds was part of Mercys life ever since. As a teenager, she volunteered in a programme for underprivileged youths and became a teacher at a Dalit school, later on.

Mercy Home started to support Swoarna in her education, when she was 15 years old. By then, she had lost her parents and lived with her grandmother in a Dalit neighbourhood.
In 2006 she joined Mercy Home and has ever since looked after the children with warmhearted patience and a bright smile one her face!
If Bus, Auto Riksha or private car – Murugan keeps Mercy Home running. As a bus driver, he takes the children to school and brings women and children from the villages to Mercy Home for Tailoring Computer Classes and Evening School. He also drives with Mercy to the vegetable market or picks Luben up from School. No doubt, he is an indispensable part of the staff!
Wasantha, Anna and Danalakshmi are in charge of the kitchen. Rice, Chutney, Sambar – they know exactly how to feed children in a nutritious and delicious way! Besides, they also serve as 'extended caretakers'. They sleep each in one room with six children and help, whereever support is needed.
Annamalai and Yellama are taking care of our Organic Garden. As former farmers, they bring deep knowledge about the natural growing of vegetables and herbs and have a good heart for the children, who join them in their work. They are wonderful members of our team!
Rani teaches stitching in our Tailoring School, Bavani runs the Computer Centre and tutors come in the evenings to run the classes of our Evening School.
Anneke Bouman runs our partner organization 'Friends of Mercy' in the Netherlands, which supports 40 children.
Every year she comes to spend the school summer break together with us in Tiruvannamalai.
